The Best Beef Tips and Mashed Potatoes

Need an idea for how to make your next dinner delicious? Look no further, we have a tasty tip; and I mean Beef Tips, because this week we have an amazing recipe for perfectly tender Halal beef tips in a hot and tasty gravy, served over homemade mashed potatoes that are just what you need!

This is a deceptively simple recipe, done in two parts but we’ll start with the most important, the beef itself. We used Halal chuck roast, available here, cut into small chunks. This worked great and provides plenty of beef, perfect for feeding a hungry group of family and friends. Chuck roast can tend to be tougher than other cuts of beef, but because this will simmer in the gravy for a while, it’ll get nice and tender. If you decide to make this for yourself, and you should, Midamar also offers Halal beef stew meat that comes in chunks and would work great for this recipe as well!

Aside from the mashed potatoes, this recipe is cooked in the same pot, so all the flavors have time to come together. When you cook the beef for the first time, you only need to cook it enough to brown on all sides before you remove it from heat. It’ll get added to the gravy to simmer for an hour where it will finish cooking and stay nice and tender without overcooking and getting tough.

The gravy itself is also a simple mix of just a few ingredients like diced yellow onion, Halal beef stock, with Worcestershire and soy sauce added to give a little extra flavor before it’s seasoned with some thyme, salt, and pepper. You don’t need much for this recipe to have a lot of great and hearty flavor, and once it’s all added to the pot, you’re off to the races. Get it simmering before adding the beef, then cover and keep simmering for an hour, with the occasional mixing thrown in, until the gravy is thick enough to coat the back of a spoon without running off. By this time the beef should also be cooked through but tender, so all that’s left is something equally delicious to serve this over, which is where our mashed potatoes come in.

Like any good mashed potato recipe, these start with the tried-and-true method of boiling some potatoes until they’re nice and soft. We opted to use Yukon Gold for ours because they tend to mix into a smoother and creamier consistency, but there’s nothing wrong with a Russet mashed potato if you like a fluffier mash. The secret ingredient for ours comes in the addition of some chive and onion cream cheese when mixing, just enough to add a bit more flavor to the potatoes and it blends perfectly into them, keeping the consistency nice and smooth. But as good as these potatoes are, they’re still missing something, and that’s tender beef tips and hot gravy over top!

This all comes together to make a top-tier comfort food, but I’m biased, I already knew I was going to like this! So don’t take my word for it, try it for yourself; it’s the perfect recipe to help get you through the cold winter months, but nothing’s stopping you from enjoying this year-round. Share it with someone and let us know what you think here or on social media, and we can’t wait to bring you another great Halal recipe.
