Viral Onion Wrapped Flying Dutchman

Viral Onion Wrapped Flying Dutchman

It’s hard to improve the experience of eating a classic cheeseburger, but if you’re feeling daring enough to try something different, then we have just the recipe for you. This week we have an onion wrapped flying Dutchman In-N-Out copycat recipe. That’s a real mouthful to say but so is this burger! So, let’s change up your burger game with fresh take. Some might already know this recipe as a favorite from drive-through’s all over the west coast, and for others they may have seen it doing the rounds all over the internet. When we saw it, we knew we had to try our own.

First and foremost, what really sets this apart from the standard burger is the choice of bun, or lack of bun in this case as this uses two thick slices of fried onion instead of your usual bread bun. As you can imagine, this does a lot to change the flavor profile that you would expect from the burger, but in a good way! You still have the classic flavor of juicy beef patties and melty cheese, but with onions that are caramelized and a little sweet from the sugar and salt they’re seasoned with before frying. Speaking of melty cheese, there’s no shortage of it on this burger because we used a slice for each bun and another between the two patties so if you’re a fan of a cheeseburger, emphasis on the cheese, then this is the recipe for you.

Such a special burger needs an equally special sauce to tie everything together, and this recipe provides just that. It’s a simple mix of a few sauces like ketchup, mayonnaise, and mustard that you would expect to find on a burger, but all mixed into one delicious sauce with a tangy and sweet flavor that goes so well with the flavors of the onion and beef.

And for the beef, we made our own patties using Halal 80/20 ground beef flattened into roughly ½ inch thick patties. We used 2 pounds of beef and split it into eight patties and this method worked great to make four double cheeseburgers with patties that fit well onto the onions without being too thick. We decided to pan fry our patties rather than grill them for this recipe, and they were great to cook in the same pan after the onion, so no need to dirty too many dishes with this recipe.

When everything’s cooked and put together, you’ll be glad you made this at home because there’s no other way to say it, this burger is messy! Two patties with cheese and sauce between two slices of fried onions was never going to be a tidy eating experience. If you’re okay with that, give this tasty and unique recipe a try and experience a fun new take on an American classic!
